Who We Are

What Is UPHIE?
Upper Peninsula Health Information Exchange (UPHIE) is a qualified organization (QO) that governs health information exchange across healthcare stakeholders in the region. UPHIE was created for the purpose of advancing Michigan’s initiative to continuously improve health care quality, efficiency, and patient safety by promoting secure, electronic exchange of health information through the Health Information Exchange (HIE) process. UPHIE is one of Michigan’s HIE QOs and gateways to the Michigan Health Information Network (MiHIN), which represents a growing network of public and private health care organizations working to overcome data sharing barriers, reduce costs, and ultimately improve the health of Michigan’s residents through population health advancements.

How do I benefit from HIE?
  • Patient – The ability for health care providers to appropriately access and securely exchange medical information improves the speed, quality, safety and cost of patient care.
  • Provider – Participation in HIE enables providers access to patients’ medical information and histories at the point of care. This helps facilitate improved care coordination and treatment efficiency.
  • Health Plan – Access to the same medical information via HIE provides a basic level of interoperability among disparate electronic health records (EHRs) maintained by individual physicians and organizations, and health plan care management platforms and claims systems.
  • Government – HIE facilitates critical public health reporting and monitoring functions such as immunizations, disease & syndromic surveillance, cancer registries, and other specialized registries.
